Policy and campaigning

Supporting and representing the drug sector in a time of change

DrugScope is committed to providing support and representation for the drug sector. We focus on the issues that have a direct impact on the development and delivery of substance misuse services, and therefore on individuals, families and communities who are affected by drug and alcohol problems. We produce briefings and other resources to inform the sector of the policy developments that will affect them, we consult and engage with the sector to get a clear sense of their views and experiences and we provide a voice at both national and local level. For example, DrugScope is represented on key Government committees, expert and advisory groups and meets regularly with Ministers and officials. We are also able to articulate our policy positions through our media and communications work.

DrugScope is committed to working in partnership with other organisations and sectors to maximise our impact and to get our messages across to policy makers. We are a member of the Recovery Partnership (with Recovery Group UK and Substance Misuse Skills Consortium), Making Every Adult Matter coalition (with Clinks, Homeless Link and Mind) and the Safer Future Communities initiative, which is helping to prepare the sector for the election of Police and Crime Commissioners. We incorporate the London Drug and Alcohol Network, giving us a strong presence in London, where we work with colleagues in other key sectors on projects on employment support, domestic violence and homelessness.

We facilitate a wide range of networks and regular consultations with our members and other key stakeholders. These include a national forum for chief executives of drug and alcohol services, a senior managers group in London, and a wide range of engagement and networking events. Our ability to speak with an authoritative and informed voice depends on the support and participation of our membership. If you are not already a DrugScope member you can find out more on our membership pages.

DrugScope works to ensure that drug policy is rational, humane and informed. We believe that its aim should be to support recovery, minimise drug-related harm, protect rights, promote inclusion and fight stigma. DrugScope speaks with a voice that is both fully independent and firmly rooted in the latest research evidence and the experiences of our wide and diverse membership and other stakeholders.
