Digestive Health Aids, Supplements & Tablets

Why do we need a balanced digestive system?

A balanced digestive system works to absorb helpful nutrients from our food. To do so, it utilises digestive enzymes which break down the food we eat and speeds up the digestive process.

This allows our bodies to stay healthy because they are getting the nutrients they need in order to perform the numerous processes it does on a daily basis.

Foods that can aid digestion

According to the NHS, eating foods that are rich in fibre and roughage will help keep your digestive system balanced. The recommended daily intake of fibre is 30g, and you can get it from:

  • Brown rice
  • Oats
  • Wholemeal bread
  • Beans
  • Fruit and vegetables

As well as this, it is important to drink plenty of water to avoid issues such as constipation as it aids the passage of faecal matter through your digestive system.

Triggers that can cause digestive issues

To continue looking after your digestive system, you can start by avoiding foods and drinks that will trigger issues. It does not mean that you need to cut these types of food out completely, but by not consuming them on a regular basis, you will be looking after your digestive system.

Spicy food

There are people who love spicy food and will add hot sauce to every meal. These are often the individuals who do not experience any stomach issues through eating really spicy food.

Whereas, some people find that after eating anything with chillies, garlic, ginger or onion in it, their digestive system is not happy. They can get heartburn, an upset stomach or diarrhoea.

If you are one of these people who have digestive troubles after consuming spicy food then it is best to largely avoid them.

Fatty meals

Greasy and fried food can cause a whole host of gut troubles. Fan favourites such as burgers, chips and takeaways are filled with fat that is incredibly difficult to digest.

This strain on your digestive system can mean that it is not working at its best and therefore not deriving all of the nutrients your body needs.

To give your digestive system a bit of a break, try to cut back on some fatty foods and replace them with fresh fruits and vegetables.

Caffeinated drinks

Drinking plenty of fluids is one of the best ways you can support your digestive system. Even when you are working hard to eat the right amount of fibre, if you are not drinking enough then it will cause issues.

Unfortunately, these fluids do not include caffeinated drinks. These types of fluids can cause heartburn and make you feel bloated through increasing acid in your stomach.

Lifestyle changes to protect your digestive system

As well as monitoring your food and water intake, there are some lifestyle changes you can make to look after your digestive system. Some are simpler than others, but will all help you in the long-run:

  1. Stay at a healthy weight – Overweight individuals may experience digestive troubles more often, especially heartburn. This is because the excess stomach fat can push against internal organs.
  2. Eat at a slow and steady pace – Eating quickly without taking the time to chew properly can cause indigestion. One tip is to put your fork down  between each and every bite.
  3. Reduce your alcohol intake – By drinking more than 8 units a night, you are putting your digestive system under a lot of stress. Occasional and moderate drinking is fine but try not to regularly binge drink.
  4. Search for ways to reduce stress – Although this is easier said than done, finding easy you can reduce stress in your day-to-day life will help your digestion. Prolonged stress can cause stomach ulcers and worsen IBS.

The power of digestive health supplements, tablets & aids

So, now the importance of the digestive system is clear, let’s see how we can keep it running optimally. Usually you are able to get nutrients from eating a balanced diet and drinking enough water. However, this is not always possible. It can be difficult to stick completely to a healthy diet, but this does not mean that your digestive system should suffer.

This is where digestion aids can be a vital addition to your daily routine. By just taking a couple every day, you can help your digestive system to continue running as it should be.
