Drugs: guidance for the youth service

Resources for use in drug education and prevention work with black and minority ethnic community groups

This report has been commissioned by DrugScope for the Drug Education and Prevention Information Service (DEPIS) in order to identify the issues and gaps in resource development for drug education and prevention work with Black and minority ethnic communities and where possible highlight examples of good practice. The research took place over a four-month period and involved a literature review of key documentation and Internet searches.It was found that there were very few examples of drug education and prevention resources targeted for use with specific Black and minority ethnic communities and service providers were very often reported as being uncertain how to obtain such resources.

First Steps in identifying young people's substance related needs

This guidance is aimed at professionals who work in statutory or voluntary health, social care, education and the criminal justice system, providing a service to children and young people. This includes: those working in schools and pupil referral units with specific drug and alcohol responsibilities, social workers, education welfare officers, care home workers, youth workers, Connexion’s personal advisers, youth offending team staff, generic counsellors, accident and emergency staff, child and adolescent mental health workers, foster carers, residential care workers, voluntary agency staff and staff at one stop shops.
