Projects

Projects:

Drugs: guidance for the police working with schools and colleges 2005 - 6

This project has involved extensive consultation with police and education practitioners, young people and other key stakeholders. The guidance offers practical and strategic support for police in drug education, drug incident management and supporting schools and other partners in developing local policies and protocols.

A series of dissemination events launched the guidance during 2006.

This work has been funded by the Home Office and the Association of Chief Police Officers.

Drugs: guidance for the youth service

Consultation with key stakeholders in 2004-5 revealed a need for guidance for the youth service on drug education, drug incident management and drug policy development. This guidance has now been launched and is available to download here

This work has been funded by DfES and DH.

Briefing papers

We are developing a series of briefing papers for practitioners on drugs of particular significance (e.g Ritalin and Ketamine) and issues in drug education for example, 'Developing culturally sensitive alcohol education resources' and'Consulting young people about the world of drugs'.

This work has been funded by DfES and DH.

Please note: We welcome suggestions for new briefing papers to support practitioners in their day to day work in drug education. Contact carolm@drugscope.org.uk

Developing drug education resources for young deaf people

Based on research carried out for the briefing paper - Drug education for young deaf people (PDF) - we are working with the National Deaf Children's Society to make drug information more accessible to young deaf people, their families and teachers. The first step is to assess the needs of young deaf people for drug information to be available in a variety of formats.

This work has been funded by an anonymous corporate donor.

Working with parents

Many different professionals and organisations now provide parenting education and support for parents who have problems with illegal drugs and alcohol. 'Working with parents' is an electronic forum to exchange information and provide mutual support for all those who work in this developing field.

We published the first three newsletters with funding from DfES and DH. The 4th has been funded by DrugScope, the most recent of which can be downloaded here. A user-survey in 2006 revealed members value being able to share practice and information with colleagues around the country. DrugScope is now seeking further funding to maintain and extend the network.

Anyone wishing to join the network (which is free) and or who has news, information or examples of practice to share is welcome to contact us at:-carolm@drugscope.org.uk
