Home Secretary Charles Clarke told BBC Radio 4's 'Today' programme this morning that he was 'worried' about new studies linking cannabis with mental health problems.
Cannabis was reclassified from a Class B to a Class C drug in January 2004, but in March 2005 Mr Clarke asked the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs to revisit the decision in the light of new research. The Council reported back to Mr Clarke before Christmas, but the contents of that report are not yet public.
Although Mr Clarke did not reveal the main recommendations of the ACMD, in an interview with The Times today he did say: "Whatever happens after this, let me reveal one recommendation of the advisory committee, which they make very, very stongly, which is a renewed commitment to public education about the potential effects of the consumption of cannabis, and the legal status of cannabis. That is well made, and I will accept it."
