Release wrote to the Home Secretary Charles Clarke on 16 December, to urge him to take the expected advice of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs concerning the classification of cannabis.
There are concerns that the government may reclassify the drug back to Class B due to concerns about links between cannabis use and mental health problems, and the increased availability of cannabis with higher THC content. The ACMD is expected to confirm its view that cannabis is significantly less harmful than the substances listed in Class B, and should therefore remain in Class C.
The Release letter was co-signed by many organisations and individuals, including the Liberal Democrats, Sting and the Governor of Brixton Prison. Release's director, Sebastian Saville, said, "We urge the government to take the advice of its own group of experts - the ACMD."
