Glasgow Addictions Service to pilot family therapy for young drug users

22 January 2007

Up to 40 Glasgow teenagers with an alcohol or drug addiction are to participate in a UK pilot of a form of family therapy developed by the University of Miami. Professor Cindy Rowe has travelled from Miami to train 10 staff at the Glasgow Addictions Service, which will begin rolling out the project in February of this year.

Speaking to the BBC, Professor Rowe said that the treatment had been successful in the US: "This type of comprehensive family-based treatment is now seen internationally as an effective tool in reducing adolescent drug use and other psychological, family and social problems."

Gemma McNeill, representing the Glasgow Addiction Service, said: "The fact we will soon be able to add therapy to the range of interventions offered to young people will keep Glasgow at the forefront of drug treatment and support."

The therapy is currently being explored in other European countries. The Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany and France are in the process of training staff to deliver the treatment.
