On Monday 18 June the RSA is hosting a lunchtime event at which Nick Clegg MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, will discuss the Liberal Democrats’ position on drug policy. This is in the context of the forthcoming consultation on the national drug strategy, which is due for review at the end of the year.
Nick Clegg will explain how the Liberal Democrats believe the debate has moved away from a close focus on the legal status of drugs and the system for classifying them to an approach that concentrates more closely on reducing drug-related harm.
The RSA Drugs Commission produced its report on drugs policy, entitled Drugs – facing facts, in March 2007. The RSA is now working on putting some of its recommendations into practice in a series of local pilots, with the aim of advancing the Society’s general aim of promoting citizen engagement and the co-creation of policy.
DrugScope’s Harry Shapiro will also be speaking at the event, on the political sensitivities around drug policy debate.
The lecture is free of charge, but places must be reserved in advance. If you would like to attend the RSA discussion event with Nick Clegg MP on Monday 18 June, please email lectures@rsa.org.uk or telephone 020 7451 6868.
