It is estimated that 150,000 children in Scotland have parents with a substance use problem.

The Scottish Government aims to address the needs of these children through focusing Scotland’s public services for children and young people on:

• prevention

• appropriate early intervention

• child-centred service delivery

• support for parents to build their confidence and capacity.

There is clear evidence that addiction services and child welfare organisations want to work more collaboratively - and that this will improve responses to our most vulnerable families.

Looking beyond risk will explore how to make these aspirations a reality, through:

  • Exploring the development of good practice in joint working between adult addiction services and child welfare services
  • Highlighting examples of good practice in working with children affected by parental substance problems and their families
  • Hearing the views of parents and young people on family support models
  • Identifying approaches for improving outcomes for children of parents with a history of drug and alcohol problems
  • Providing an understanding of good practice in key interventions
  • Updating delegates on the current Scottish policy landscape for children generally and children affected by parental substance problems specifically

Speakers confirmed to date include:

  • Professor Sally Haw, Head of Complex Intervention, Public Health Research Group, University of Stirling
  • Dr Mary Hepburn, Consultant Obstetrician, Glasgow Special Needs in Pregnancy Service and Evening Times Scotswoman of the Year
  • Andrew Horne, Director of Operations, Addaction Scotland and acting Chair, Drug Strategy Delivery Commission
